A Catamaran, is a multi-hulled watercraft. South Indians developed it around 5th century A.D. their use is widely mentioned in Tamil literature and the western world started using catamarans in the late 19th century. The word "catamaran" traces its origin from the Tamil word, kattumaram, a common term for wooden logs bound together in Tamil Nadu. Catamarans nowadays are designed for recreational and sports purpose have a crew of two and can be operated from a beach. They generally have a trampoline on the bridging structure, a 360°rotating mast and full-length battens on the mainsail.
